In the Book A Guide To Maintaining Your Focus, author Amara Hues’ main point is that Self-motivation is essential for success in every aspect of your life. According to Hues “…We get in our own way whenever we hang onto unconsciously held fears, such as loss, failure, and rejection” (pg.5). In some of these instances, we may not know what we are holding onto until we see the outcomes of these hindrances. Hues also wrote, “…By learning how to find motivation, you'll gain the tools to overcome dips, improve your mental toughness, stay focused on your goals, and achieve success” (pg.3). These skills are useful in handling all the curve balls life can throw our way. Also, she states “…Rather than fight yourself, you might want to befriend yourself” (pg. 12). The only one who can motivate you is yourself shouldn’t you be rooting for yourself as well, that is where success is achievable.
Furthermore, Hues advocate that change doesn’t happen instantaneously. It is the result of one’s determination in seeing change come to fruition. Hues also emphasize that we must stay motivated despite the ups and downs. At the forefront of our mind should be the “why” –the reason for our steps taken when we encounter any loss of motivation. We must identify what generates repetitive negative thinking and combat these negative patterns with positivity.
Notably, Hues specifies that we need to understand the barriers that may impede our success such as self-sabotage and she offers several strategies to help ignore the negative voices in our minds. Just as important, we should align our goals with what works best for us as individuals while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to changes and circumstances. We should also celebrate the small wins, not just the “grand plans” because these events bring confidence, elevate mood, and keep us motivated.
